Schedule for Finals
Hey gang,
Let's do two finals. The first will be on Thursday, December 8th, 8-11am. We'll do a second on Tuesday, December 13th 9-11am.
Johanna (johannalynn88@gmail.com), is going to start a sign-up sheet and we'll figure out who wants to present on which day.
Print 5 of your images on 11x14 paper, give the images a 2-inch border on each size at a minimum... Don't matt them, don't frame them. Just print them.

An article worth reading...
I read this today and thought about the discussion we had in class yesterday...no not the one about UFO's...not the one about Bigfoot...but the one where we talked about doing what your instructors are asking you to do. The conversation where you feel like you are just jumping through hoops. Where you're not sure why you're being asked to do certain things for class.

Final Critique
Date: December 8th 8-10:50
Requirements:
20 images around a theme that is NOT about you.
5 prints, make them consistent with each other, same border, same margins, same-same-ness. Don't make them look like a hodge-podge of crap you pulled out from under your bed.
Bring something to snack on. Remember I like Mexican Coke's and Peanut M&M's.
I will be here at 7:30 if you guys want to get here early and sign up for a time to be critiqued. Remember if you wait until the end I will be tired and grumpy and we might run out of time to look at your stuff. If you don't care about any of those things then wait until the end. If you DO care about those things (HINT: YOU SHOULD), then sign up for an early time to show your work.
This should be something that you are willing to spend an extended period of time and a significant emotional investment in.
Good luck.
Remember, 40% of your grade comes from this. Don't screw up.

Assignment #4 - Place and History
Photograph three separate places. Each of these places should be tied to some piece of history. It can be personal history or history that is more widely understood and documented.
With each of these three images I want you to also write or get information about each place to be shown with your photograph. The image helps the writing and the writing helps the photograph. There are ways to make your work stronger when you include text.

Assignment #2 - One Square Mile
You will have chosen an area in Utah County that equals one square mile (one mile on all four sides). For the sake of ease, on a 1:10,000 map, the radius of a dime is approximately one square mile.
Within that square mile you will use your Ninja-like skills to find and flush out a compelling story that you will photograph for the next two weeks.
Please don't go for the obvious story. Look for something that is a little more challenging, and one that you will need two weeks to fully explore.
On Thursday, September 22nd you should have an initial shoot or two done and I want you to bring those images to class and we will discuss them.
You should have a final edit of 15 photographs by the following Thursday, September 29th.

Early morning before school, I ran into the kitchen to quickly down some breakfast. Mom was making breakfast and watching life footage of the firs tower that had been hit. It had a hole in it and was on fire. I didn't know that an airplane had flew into it. Well, quickly went to school and after my first period, I was hanging out by the old door at my school and heard that both towers had collapsed and the Pentagon had been hit. I walked to my next class with Coach Hall and I overhead him say, "Damn those bastards." And that's the last thing I remember of that day.

"10 years later... 9/11 makes me cry and swim in my head every moment. I'll never forget those three firemen who helped each other raise the US flag on the hill. I'll never forget the people who were hurt and dead. To keep me from forgetting, I look at the words on the wall, 'Lest We Forget, our Fallen Brothers.'"

"When I first heard about the world trade center attack, I wasn't really aware of what happened. I was at home, and walked into(living room) my mom balling, and the planes crashing into the buildings was playing over and over on TV(b&W). I went to school that day and all we were talking about was 9/11. I never really put thought into what this has caused in our world today. I just thought that it was a really sad thing, and that it wasn't going to affect us this huge. Until recently, my best friend and 3 of my cousins enlisted in the Army. I really started to think about things, and why my family members and best friend have to risk their lives everyday because of 9/11. I started to hate the government, and the fact that to get a job and provide for your family people have to join to make money. It is their choice, but some people don't have the option, I always think, what if 9/11 didn't happen, would I be going through all these trials with people I love risking their lives? If the war was over, we wouldn't be going through all of this, as a family, and a country. But because they are willing to risk their lives and fight for our safety and freedom, to try and stop this war from continuing, it should hopefully help our futures in the long run. 9/11 has been a huge affect on the United States, and many people, and will always be. I pray everyday that the war will end."

On September 11, 2001 I was conducting flight missions in Kuwait in support of operation desert Spring. Our mission was a show of force mission where we would use our helicopters on flight training missions and aerial gunnery up along the Iraqi border so as to show the Iraqis that that we had a presence there. Also, if anything occurred where Iraq decided to invade Kuwait again we would be there as part of the defense that country.
Earlier in the day on September 11, 2001 we had been conducting an exercises, flying up along the Iraqi border. Because we were 8 hours ahead of eastern time, we were debriefing our mission when my operations sergeant came in to tell us we needed to come in and see the news on TV. I told him we were in the middle of a briefing and he told me that we really needed to come see what was going on in New York. We got there in time to watch the second aircraft hit the trade center and we knew immediately this was no accident and that we were under attack.
I remember leaving our offices that evening and going back to our barracks and parking my vehicle up against the wall. As I turned my back to the wall to walk to my barracks, for the first times in my life I was actually a little nervous about what was on the outside of the wall and feeling unsafe or uncomfortable. At that time we had no idea what was going on, if this was part of a larger attack or part of a coordinated effort on the part of the enemies of the united states. So it was a little unnerving being that far into the Middle East on 9/11 and watching those things happen back home.

"It really kinda sucks." Zachary Muse told me, as I asked him about the terrorist attacks on September 11th. Zachary celebrated his first birthday on that fateful September day. Although he can't exactly remember the day itself, the aftermath has definitely made an impact. Since he's really never known anything else but our nation at war I asked him how it has affected him. He responded by saying he was surprised when they finally found Osama Bin Laden, and killed him. He was very happy his reign of terror had ended. I could tell he was intrigued by the idea that good really does prevail in the end.

"On September 11, 2001 I left for school at UVU and turned on the radio. I heard the radio announcers talking about a plane crashing into one of the twin towers. I called my husband and told him to turn on the television to see what was going on. Shortly after the radio announced that another plane had crashed into the other tower. I could not believe what I was listening to. When I arrived at UVU, the news was on every television in the school. We all stood around watching the horrific scene live. It is an image I will never get out of my mind.
As we were watching, two more planes crashed and the towers fell to the ground. The thought of all the people left inside was more than any of us wanted to imagine. The debris flying and people running away from the scene was awful. When they began talking about it being a terrorist attack I could no longer stay at school. I wanted to get home and be with my family. It was the first time I didn’t feel safe as an American. I will never forget that day."

Joe boarded a plane that morning headed from Boise to Portland. When they landed he said there was the strangest feeling about, no hustle and bustle that their usually was in an airport. As he looked around he witnessed everyone in the airport looking up at the television screens. It was then that he learned of the horrific events of that morning.

Guest Speaker - Jay Drowns
I'm having Jay Drowns, the photographer for The Sporting News come and talk to us about what he does tomorrow morning at 8am. He'll be here for an hour before he has to head back to SLC and finish shooting a story he's working on this week about the Ute's joining the PAC-12.
If you want to invite any of your friends or other students to come join us, it should be pretty dang interesting.
